How to Jump Start Car Battery

Once you’ve done it, you’ll be able to do it again or help a Fairfield neighbor. Here’s the proper way to jump start a car:
- Find a friendly face with a working vehicle to help you. We’ll refer to this as the booster car. Park the hoods facing one another, or as close as possible.
- Now, ensure both vehicles are off and engage both parking brakes.
- Pop the hoods and locate both batteries. Remove any plastic housing as necessary.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal on the dead battery.
- Connect the red clamp to the positive terminal of the booster car.
- Connect the black clamp to the negative terminal on the booster car.
- Connect the last black clamp to an unpainted metal surface on the dead car’s frame.
- Once everything is hooked up securely, start the booster car.
- Now, start the dead car. It should fire right up. If not, turn it back off, rev the engine on the booster car a few times, and try again.
- Once the jumped engine turns over, remove the cables in the opposite order you clamped them. Be careful to keep them from touching each other, as this can create dangerous sparks.
- Drive the jumped car for a while throughout Westport or elsewhere as this will allow your car to regain an ample charge.
If you shut your vehicle off too quickly, it may not retain the charge. You’ll need to give your alternator time to work! If your car won’t jump start, it’s likely that you’re in need of a new battery. If you’re in the Darien area, you can pick up a suitable replacement at our parts department.
